The SEC moves to 3-0 in the conference challenge as Tennessee takes down the Huskies, 35-9.
The Huskies broke a huge run on their first play as it had been a while since the Tennessee defense (with its new defensive coordinator) saw a triple option offense. However, the Vols showed their toughness as they held the Huskies to a field goal, despite their position in the red zone. In fact, both times the Huskies made it inside the Volunteer 20, they failed to score a TD.
Washington lived with the big play and couldn't really sustain any drives, as evidenced by their mere 5 first downs and 183 total yards of offense. Meanwhile, Tennessee ran a pretty balanced attack, as their 440 total yards came from 240 rushing yards and 200 passing yards. While Peterman did throw two interceptions in this game, the Volunteer defense kept the Huskies out of the end zone the entire game and it was enough for the win.
Once again, third down conversions were important in this game. Washington converted 1/8 on third down, while Tennessee converted 9/12. The high conversion meant the Volunteers again held the ball for nearly 20 minutes, keeping their defense well-rested for those red zone stops.
Nate Peterman had a decent game, throwing 16/19 for 200 yards and 2 TDs. If I just stopped there, it would have been a great game; however, of Peterman's 3 incompletions, two were interceptions (though one was a ridiculous one. I mean seriously, how can a middle linebacker who isn't even facing the ball make an INT?).
Davante Bourque announced his return by rushing for 198 yards and a TD.
Through the air, Jason Croom caught eight passes for 144 yards and 2 TDs. The senior has proven himself as the next Belitnikoff finalist to come out of Wide Receiver U.
The turning point in this game came towards the end of the second half. Tennessee recorded a safety after throwing an INT in the red zone at the end of the first quarter, but Washington still fought back. After a UT touch down to open up the second quarter, Washington scored two consecutive field goals, including a 50-yarder. However, Tennessee scored 13 points in the final 35 seconds of the second quarter. After sustaining a nice drive while running the ball, Tennessee turned to a playaction pass and found Croom in the end zone with 35 seconds to go. Tennessee regained the ball by forcing an interception (I think) and threw the ball deep with about 10 seconds left hoping for something good to happen. When Bowles came down with the ball at about the 17 yard line, Tennessee settled for a FG with 5 seconds left in the half, not trying to be greedy and fit in two plays. On the ensuing kickoff, Tennessee squibbed it to prevent a big return. However, the Huskies never touched the ball, and because the ball had travelled more than 10 yards, Tennessee recovered at about the 6 yard line with one second left. The Vols kicked a FG with no time left to go into halftime with a 25-9 lead.
The Huskies would never score again, and the Vols came away with the victory.
Good game, Wings. You had some tough breaks, but I still think you'll have a good season. Good luck.
